On September 17, 1787, the Constitutional Convention concluded in Philadelphia. As Franklin left Independence Hall, a woman reportedly asked him, “Well, Doctor, what have we got—a republic or a monarchy?” Franklin's response was, “A republic, if you can keep it.”
Franklin's message couldn't be more clear.
